HISTORY OF THE NAME BOTTONY CROSS
Bottony Cross Chapter, NSDAR, organized on November 27, 1956, took its name from the cross on the Maryland State flag. Translated from the French "Croix Botonee," Bottony Cross describes the manner in which each arm terminates in a bud or trefoil. Since the early days of the Maryland Colony, the Bottony Cross has been part of Maryland's Great Seal and its state flag. Maryland's flag bears the quartered arms of the Calvert and Crossland families. Calvert was the family name of the Lord Baltimore, who founded Maryland; and, Crossland was the family name of the mother of George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore. Maryland law requires that if any ornament is affixed to the top of a flagstaff carrying the Maryland flag, that ornament must be a gold Bottony Cross.
